A Level Further Mathematics

What will be studied?

The A Level qualification is a combination of Further Pure and Applied content. The applied content will be a combination of two components, Decision and Statistics. Further Pure Mathematics includes topics on matrices, geometry, further calculus and proof.  Decision focuses on algorithms, linear programming, networks and game theory and Statistics includes the topics of discrete random variables, Poisson distribution, chi squared tests and the exponential distribution

How will I be assessed?

The A Level Further Mathematics course is assessed through three written papers, of equal weighting, at the end of the second year, each 2 hours in duration.

  • Paper 1 – Further Pure Mathematics
  • Paper 2 – Further Pure Mathematics
  • Paper 3 – Decision and Statistics

There will be a mix of question styles, from short, single-mark questions to multi-step problems.

What next?

This course is studied alongside A Level Mathematics and is ideally suited to students who have enjoyed and excelled at GCSE Mathematics. Many of the top universities now require students to have studied Further Mathematics when applying for a course with significant mathematical content.

The Academy has also had experience in supporting students who are preparing for STEP, and MAT  examinations.
